Croft Cottage.Croft Cottage Installation

The owner of Croft cottage is a director of South West Wood Fuels and a wood fuel enthusiast for over 20 yrs. The first boiler installed in the thatch cottage was an Astoria 80, an English made log-burning boiler.

Latest down burning technology

This boiler was 80000 btu and heated the small 3 bedroom cottage successfully for 23+ years. This boiler was loaded from the top and a door at the bottom of the boiler monitored the natural draft airflow. This boiler was highly inefficient and lost a lot of its heat up the flue. A Vigas 25 boiler was purchased in September 2003 and installed in the cottage during late October. This boiler is the latest in down burning technology with a highly sophisticated digital display. Unlike batch burning log boilers this boiler has a ventilator fan controlled by the digital display, which gives a high level of control. The boiler doesn't use unnecessary fuel, and is very efficient and is as sensitive and controllable as an oil boiler. The boiler has a 120-litre log magazine that stores enough logs for about 14 hours burning.

Currently the logs are stacked at a nearby sawmill for between 1-2 years until they reach a moisture content of about 20%, then cut to length (22") split and loaded into a trailer with a Palaz 600 combi firewood processor. These are then towed back to Croft Cottage and stacked by hand in a log store, which holds about 8 cubic metres.

The boilers consumption is about 4 kg/hour and will use about 25 cubic metres of cut logs per year. The boiler heats the hot water and central heating and keeps the house at a pleasant steady temperature throughout the day and night. Estimated cost of heating the house is approximately 60% than if it was heated by oil.
